The Simplest Way to Make Your Fence Problems Vanish

Most people call because something has started to bother them every time they pull into the driveway. A crack running up the block. A section of wall that no longer stands straight. A gate that has to be lifted to close.

Tempe Fence Company takes care of all of it: block walls, wood, vinyl, iron and chain link fencing, gates, and pool fencing. Hiring a fence company in Tempe should be simple. Someone comes out and looks at it, tells you what it needs and why, gives you a price in writing, and does the work well enough that you go back to not noticing your wall at all.

Most Tempe Walls Are Simply Getting Old

Tempe filled in during the 1960s and 70s, and the block walls went up along with the houses. Fifty years later, a lot of them are reaching the point where they need some attention. That is normal. It does not mean anyone neglected anything.

The better news is that most of these walls are worth saving. A wall that has cracked in one spot, with solid ground under it, can be repaired so well that you have to look for the seam. We will tell you honestly which kind you have.

1960s and 70s

Built with the neighborhood

The wall went up the same week as the house, by the same crews, to the same standard.

Fifty years later

Reaching that age now

Ground in the Valley moves as it takes on and loses moisture, and eventually the wall shows it.

Today

Most are worth repairing

With solid ground underneath, a wall can be fixed in place and matched closely enough that the repair does not stand out.

Repair It, or Replace It?

Most walls and fences in Tempe can be repaired, and repair is almost always the cheaper answer, so that is where we start.

Some cannot. If the ground under a wall has moved, restacking the block without dealing with what is underneath means the same lean comes back. When that is the situation, we say so, because a repair that fails twice costs more than doing it properly once.

Fences work the same way. If one post has shifted, we reset that post. If most of the line is loose at the bottom, rebuilding it is the better spend. Either way you will see what we see before you decide anything.

Fence Materials Compared, for Arizona Sun

Most fencing decisions here come down to how a material handles heat and sunlight, how much upkeep you want, and whether you need to be hidden from the street. This is how the five common choices compare.

Material How it holds up here Upkeep Privacy Relative cost
Block wall Longest lasting of the five. Does not rot, does not fade, and is not bothered by sun. What eventually moves is the ground under it. Very low Full Highest
Wrought iron Very long lived. The finish is what wears, usually low down where sprinklers hit it, and it can be refinished rather than replaced. Very low. Keep sprinklers off it None, you see through it High
Vinyl Holds up well if the product is UV-stabilized for desert heat. Cheaper grades go brittle and sag, so the grade is the whole story. Very low, rinse it off Full Medium
Wood Shortest lived of the five here, and it is the sun that does it rather than rain. Post depth decides how long the fence stands. Sealing or staining Full Medium
Chain link Long lived and easy to repair in sections. Steel posts can corrode below ground where water sits, which is a setting problem. Very low None, unless slats are added Lowest

These are general comparisons for the East Valley, not guarantees. How long any fence lasts depends more on how the posts and foundation went in than on the material on top of them.

Want privacy?

Block wall first, then vinyl or wood. Block costs the most up front and asks the least of you afterward.

Want the view?

Wrought iron. It marks the boundary without closing off the yard, and it is the usual choice around a pool.

Want it done for less?

Chain link for a yard, dog run or rental. Repairable a section at a time, which keeps it cheap for years.

What Good Fence Work Looks Like

  • Cracks that stay closedA crack in a block wall usually means the ground under it moved. Deal with what is underneath and the crack does not come back.
  • Walls that stand straightA leaning section can be taken down and rebuilt on solid ground so the whole wall line runs true again.
  • New walls that stay putA new wall gets a foundation sized for the soil it is going into, so it holds its line for decades.
  • Clean block, no chalky whiteThat powdery white on block is moisture working its way through. Stop the moisture and the face stays clean.
  • Posts that hold through monsoonSet at the right depth with drainage underneath, posts stay standing when the wind comes through.

For landlords and property managers

Rental Properties Run on a Schedule

A broken gate or a damaged fence panel has to be handled between tenants, not next month. Tell us the turn date and we will work to it.

If the property has a pool, the fencing has to meet Arizona's safety requirements, which means a gate that swings shut and latches by itself every single time. We can check yours and fix whatever does not pass. See pool fencing.

Send over a list of properties and what needs attention, and we will get through them in one pass. Call (480) 470-8551.

What is a block wall made of?

The gray block used for almost every wall in the Valley is concrete block. It is stacked in rows, bonded with mortar, reinforced with steel and concrete inside, and set on a concrete foundation. It does not rot and never needs painting, which is why the Valley builds with it.

Why is my block wall leaning?

Almost always the ground underneath. Soil here expands and shrinks as it takes on and loses moisture, the foundation shifts, and the wall above follows it. That is why a good repair starts below the wall. Put the block back without addressing what moved and the lean comes back.

How much does fence repair cost?

It depends on how much fence is involved, how tall it is, the condition of what is holding it up, whether a gate is part of the job, and the material you choose. The estimate is free, so the fastest way to a real number is to have someone come look at it.

What is the fence law in Arizona?

Two sets of rules. The state sets pool barrier requirements for anything enclosing a pool. Everything else comes from your city, and in Tempe that covers how tall a fence can be in the front yard versus the back, when a permit is needed, and what is allowed on corner lots. Your HOA can be stricter than the city. More on the FAQ page.

Can you match my existing wall?

Usually close, and we will be straight with you about it. Block that has been in the sun for fifty years never matches new block exactly, and fresh mortar starts out lighter before it cures. We point out ahead of time which repairs will blend in and which ones will show.
